On Saturday mornings our church hosts Foodnet, an urban gleaning program designed to rescue perishable foods from the dumpster and to provide wholesome food for people in our community. I wrote about this program in the article titled My Hustle Doesn’t Make Any Money But It Saves Me $300 a Month on My Food Bill.

Use it or lose it

Foodnet is a massive undertaking and requires lots of volunteer hours. Drivers pick up the food from restaurants and residential facilities and deliver it to the distribution sites. Other volunteers sort through the donations and separate everything into types of foods such as canned goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese, milk, eggs, sweets, and bread. You’d be amazed at how much bread we get.
