“STRANGERS MADE MY DAD’S BIRTHDAY EXTRA SPECIAL!”

My 99-year-old dad enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles. So, before his birthday last year, I posted a request on Facebook for people to send him puzzles. The response was overwhelming: He received 110 puzzles from all over the U.S.! Dad kept shaking his head, says, “Why would they do this for me? They don’t even know me!” Many people included notes wishing him well and thanking him for his service during World War II. Their kindness continues to bring joy to Dad as he works on the puzzles. We’re now looking forward to his 100th birthday in July! Elizabeth Erlandson, Lincoln, NE

I wrote this piece a few months ago and submitted it to Woman’s World magazine. They published it this week, just in time for Father’s Day.

My dad will be 100 years old on July 17th. He is in good health and in high spirits. On our last phone call, he said, “Just 37 more days, honey!”

On the left is a picture of my dad, Al Godlewski, when he was in the Army during WWII. The photo on the right was taken in July 2023. He is reading a birthday postcard and wearing his WWII cap.

Dad loves hearing from people. You can send him a birthday card at this address: Al G. c/o Joanne Bryson, 308 Francis Avenue, Norristown, PA 19401
