Shame, Shame, Go Away!

How I learned to stop hiding and come into the light

Perhaps you’ve heard the saying The eyes are the window of the soul. Our eyes reveal who we are and, in many cases, how we are feeling.

The Bible expresses a similar idea.

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness. Matthew 6:22–23 (NIV)

For years, while I was grappling with the deep rift between my daughter and me, I often wished I could wear sunglasses. No matter how determined I was to put a smile on my face, I knew my eyes revealed my sadness.

Upturned lips and a toothy grin didn’t convince me all was well, and I was sure that everyone else could see through my façade.

I couldn’t bear to have my brokenness exposed.
